I’m sure you’ve seen the movies, but have you read the books? Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic character is just as fun in the books as he is on screen. The tempers, the idiosyncrasies, the details, and clues are all very familiar in these short reads, originally intended for a newspaper audience. These stories are great ones to read out loud or side-by-side with your older kids.
My teen readers have been enjoying these two volumes, each at a different pace. The silver edged Barnes and Noble copy with embossed cover was a Christmas Eve gift for my 14 yr son and he’s almost finished. I picked up the giant red one for $5 at a library book sale and my daughter read the whole thing in roughly the same amount of time. She blazes through. He’s methodical. Either way, they’ve both enjoyed reading about the famous detective’s exploits.
And now I think all my children should be supplied with their own copy of Sherlock Holmes before they head off into the world! Though I do love the idea of filling a hope chest with beautiful dishes and linens, books are less likely to go out of style. My husband will be thrilled with my new idea of filling a book hope chest for each of our kids. 😉
